This was a standalone game and it was not necessary to own FASA's main Role Playing Game to play, and the game box set was therefore usually sold separately. The Star Trek: Starship Tactical Combat Simulator (STSTCS) was a tabletop strategy game put out by FASA to complement their Star Trek: The Role Playing Game (RPG), and was essentially the renamed second edition of the three years earlier released Star Trek II: Starship Combat Simulator, as was also indicated by being reassigned the same '2003' FASA catalognumber.
